The University of Rhode Island (URI) Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) hosts the UNESCO Cousteau Chair as part of a next initiative, which will combine the talents of the GSO, The Cousteau
Society, and other UNESCO Chairs, active on coastal issues. The initiative, called the Global Coastal Assessment Program (CGAP) ,will bring together scientists, coastal management specialists, and ocean engineers to assess and synthesize coastal research on the health of global coastal regions targeted by the program.
A unique aspect of GCAP is the integration of natural science, social science, and engineering disciplines to recommend solutions for coastal regions under extreme environmental stress.
The UNESCO-Cousteau Ecotechnie Chair in Global Coastal Assessment will also work to synthesize scientific data relating to the health of coastal ,ecosystems, analyze the health of coastal areas in addition to assessing and proposing policy and management strategies for targeted regions. It will also work to develop mitigation strategies and educational materials while providing support to applied solutions for environmental problems.
