Cousteau Divers

Connecting divers and scientists, Cousteau Divers harnesses the power of citizen science to protect marine ecosystems and monitor ocean health.

Empowering Divers to Protect Our Oceans

Cousteau Divers was founded in 2009 by Pierre-Yves Cousteau, son of the legendary Jacques-Yves Cousteau, as a non-profit organization dedicated to citizen science and marine conservation. Since its inception, the program has connected a passionate community of divers and scientists, working together to safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations.

Dive with a Purpose:

Through Cousteau Divers, recreational divers worldwide can contribute to the understanding and conservation of marine ecosystems. Using simple methods and accessible technology, divers can record observations of marine life during or after their dives, turning every underwater adventure into useful observations for ocean research and protection.

Here’s how it works:

  • Divers log specific information about marine life and habitats, helping to monitor ocean health in real time.
  • Photos collected by divers are geotagged and timestamped, creating a valuable database of marine biodiversity and human impact.
  • Scientists analyze this data to identify species, track environmental changes, and inform conservation efforts.

By participating, divers don’t just explore the ocean — they help protect it.

Making Waves: What We Do

  1. Citizen Science:
Cousteau Divers empowers divers to make meaningful contributions to marine research. By logging observations and sharing underwater photos, divers become essential partners in the study of marine biodiversity and environmental changes.
  2. Raising Awareness:
Since 2009, Cousteau Divers has raised awareness about environmental challenges through public conferences, media outreach, and social media campaigns. Follow us on social media (@CousteauDivers) to learn more and join the conversation.
  3. Marine Conservation:
Cousteau Divers actively advocates for the creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) worldwide. One notable success includes supporting the creation of an MPA in Santorini, Greece, in collaboration with local stakeholders and institutions.

Why We Dive: Protecting What We Love

As divers, we witness firsthand the impacts of human activity on the ocean, from declining biodiversity to habitat degradation. Cousteau Divers exists because we’ve seen the damage caused by human activity, from coral bleaching to dwindling fish populations.

We believe in turning passion into purpose by:

  • Understanding the Ocean: Knowledge is the foundation of conservation.
  • Protecting Marine Life: Data from divers helps inform policies and protections.
  • Inspiring Change: Small actions from many people lead to big impacts.

Together, we can ensure the ocean thrives for generations to come.
